Computer moving checklist

Data
Data and programs Backup all important data. Transfer data and program files separately from your computers.
Disconnecting computers
Powering down PCs Turn off your computers and peripheral devices. If your network has a battery backup, drain the battery backup by plugging in an appliance (fan or other safe appliance). Doing so reduces the chance anything goes wrong during your move.
Disconnect cables Disconnect all computer cables. If you're a novice and don't understand your cabling, mark each cable with labeled tape so you can easily assemble your network at a later time. If packaging allows, a cable can be disconnected at one end and left attached on the other. Individually fasten each cable so they do not become tangled during packaging, the move or during reassembly.
Packing your computer
Moving box for computers If available, package your computer in its original box and packaging. But if doing so, you'll need to make sure all cables are disconnected. If original packaging is not available, find a sturdy box at least 6 inches larger than your computer's height, width and depth. Note that Apple/Mac computers come with little packaging, so you may want to have more packaging than what was originally provided. Place packaged Apple/Macs in a larger box.
Packing computers If original packaging is not available, package your computer with crumpled newspaper or foam. If protecting the computers finish is important, first wrap it in a cloth or bed sheet.
Packing printers
Remove printer cartridges Printer cartridges can become damaged during a move. Its best to dislodge them and store these separately.
Moving box for your printer If your original printer packaging is not available, find a sturdy moving box 6" larger than your printer's height, width and depth.
Packing your printer Since your printer has moving components, make sure anything that moves or flops is secured and cannot break during your move. Wrap printer in cloth or bubble wrap. Surround your printer with wadded up newspapers or foam. Avoid foam packing peanuts, as they can get in your printer's movable components.
Monitors
Package your monitor Cover your monitor's screen with a protective cloth or foam to avoid scratching or breaking. Place your monitor in a large sturdy box and package with newspaper.
Computer peripherals
Packing your peripherals Package your computer's peripherals (routers, speakers, camera docks and etc) in their original package material, if possible. Place all peripherals in a larger box so you'll have everything convenient when you need to reassemble your computer and network.
