Garage sale checklist

Having a garage sale is not only a money saver, but it's also a money maker! You'll save money by not having to move unnecessary items and you'll make a little dough by selling your items. Your bound to have a successful yard or rummage sale if you follow this checklist.

Garage sale checklist

2 months before your move
Set a date Make sure you unload as many items as possible before obtaining your moving quote. Weekends are best for a sale and avoid public holidays! Typically, spring time and early summer present the best season for a yard sale.
2 weeks before your yard sale checklist
Consider a joint rummage sale Consider having friends, family or neighbors join your rummage sale, since bigger sales will attract more customers. As a bonus, you'll have multiple locations to choose from when selecting the best yard sale location.
Choose your location If having a joint rummage sale, go with the best location from your list of garage salers. If going solo and you have a garage, you're basically set. For those with only a lawn, have a sale on you lawn but include an alternate date for your sale should weather force you to cancel. For those without a garage or lawn, find a friend's garage or a parking lot for your sale location. Of course, you'll need permission first!
Gather your garage sale items Gather all items you'd rather not move to your new locale. Keep in mind, there's a buyer for nearly everything. Especially if the price is right!
Price your items Generally speaking, items should be priced 30% of their new price. Clothes should be priced 5% to 15% of new price.
Write your ad Write your garage sale ad, making sure to include the location, date and a list of noteworthy items. Calling this a Garage/Moving Sale may net you more customers since people are more likely to attend a sale from those moving.
One week before your garage sale checklist
Place garage sale ads Place your ads where people are bound to see them. Area posting boards, CraigsList.org, free classified listing papers and local newspapers are all great places to advertise. Make sure to include a big sign, and optional balloons, in front of your garage sale location!
Decide where to place yard sale signs Create the signs you'll be placing on nearby highways and roads. Remember you'll have to have a sign at every intersection steering your customers to your location. Make sure to include the garage sale date and address on each sign.
Create garage sale signs Once you know where your signs will be placed, create signs with the appropriate signage (arrows, etc). If one has to travel a long distance on a straight road, make sure to place a 'garage sale one mile ahead sign' to ensure people they are still on the correct route.
Set up your location Find tables and place your sale items for display. Hang clothes on racks. Create a comfortable shopping area so customers linger and shop.
Night before sale
Place your signs Place your garage sale signs early in the evening. This will give you a full evening of 'advertising' as people drive by the signs.
Change Make sure you have enough change for breaking all those $20 an $100 bills the next day!
Morning of sale
Secure your doors No matter when your sale starts, you're bound to get early customers. Since these customer are aggressive, you'll want to ensure they don't weasel their way into unwanted locations. Secure your doors!
Begin your sale Right before your sale, move any remaining items onto your lawn or driveway. Then unlock your doors and begin your sale!
Evening of sale
Take down your signs Remove the signage you placed in the neighborhood. Remove the flyers posted on community bulletin boards.
Donate to charity You're bound to have unsold items. Consider donating these to a charity!
