Moving home checklist

Moving home checklist

For many reasons, people need to move back to a home. Whether they are college students, down on their luck or have been living abroad, here's a relocation list designed to ease your transition.

Moving home checklist

Protect your privacy
Private phone When moving back home, you've likely amassed quite a few contacts. Make sure your cell phone service and number can stay the same before your move. For college kids, you wouldn't want that late night booty call to be placed to your parent's home phone!
Mailing address Before rerouting your mail, make sure your mail address is still valid. If there's mail you'd prefer not go to your location's general mail box, either cancel this mail or make arrangements for the mail to be sent to an alternate location.
Consider when moving home
Duplicate items You've been away and likely have amassed furniture, furnishings and utensils. Since many of these possessions are duplicates of what you have back home, unload these duplicates before your move. If your move is temporary, consider getting a self storage rental. If your move is permanent, consider a yard sale or donating these items to a charity.
Change your address In the weeks prior to your move or relocation, contact necessary places to inform them of your new address.
Financial considerations
Check your credit Make sure your credit report doesn't have inaccuracies before your move. Issues with local creditors are easier to resolve when you can meet in person with people. So check your credit!
Negotiate with credit card companies Since you're about to move and creditors and credit card companies are less apt to issue credit to newly moved people, renegotiate your monthly interest before moving. Or if you need a card or are unsatisfied with your existing card, apply for a card before you'll need to change your address.
