Top items you shouldn’t pack when moving

When moving into a new location, packaging plays a vital role. However, you don’t need to pack all the belongings into boxes; some of your items should be kept in your custody even when you are relocating. More importantly, these items don’t necessarily take much space and hence you can easily carry them in your car. Listed below are the top items you shouldn’t pack when moving.

  • Your insurance documents

Apart from the vehicle insurance (which is compulsory), you need to keep your health insurance papers with you.

  • Pets’ documents

Buy some envelops (one for each pet). Put recent photos, health documents, reports of vaccination and any other document pertaining to your pets in these envelopes.

  • Maps

Have a clear road map with you. It should be kept in front of your vehicle. Keeping an additional map can always be handy, however.

  • New keys

Get your new keys in advance and have them attached to your key chain.

  • Medical records

Don’t pack the medical records and prescriptions of your family members. Have them filed and keep them with you.

  • Information of the utilities

Get the contact numbers of the new utility suppliers and have them with you. These contact numbers can be instrumental right after arriving at the new place.

  • Valuable personal documents

Documents including passports, birth certificates and other personal papers should be filed and kept with you.

  • Change of clothes (if your move is an interstate move)

When it comes to an interstate move and you have to cover a long distance that take a whole day or two, have some change of clothes with you (one extra per family member). In fact, a fresh set of clothes can bring a very cheerful feeling after a long drive.

What is mentioned above can be considered as a ‘travel kit’. These items have exceptional value when it comes to a convenient living until you travel to the other end and have your belongings unloaded.

Over the past years, many incidents were reported due to loss of one or more above mentioned items. To make things more organized and simplified, you can have your pets’ food in Zip-lock bags (one for each pet) in appropriate amounts. This strategy makes pet feeding is a very simple task even when you are on the move.

What you need to avoid is the feeling of “somewhere in the box” for a stress free relocation.

Additionally, it is always important to contact your moving company in advance and get the estimate delivery date and time. Maintaining a good communication with the moving company will offer a great relief for you. Apart from the things you have with you, you need to pack all the other belongings with proper labeling for a hassle-free moving.

Before you move, make sure to sign off from all the existing utility service of your old house. Try to prepare for your relocation at least a month before the moving date to avoid last hour rush.
