Basic moving tips – Part 02

As a continuation of the previous article (Basic moving tips – part 02), here are some other basic moving tips for your consideration.

  • Have a lot of boxes

One of the vital things you should consider when planning your move is to get prepared with many boxes. The last thing you need is to run out of boxes at the last minute and get yourself stressed. Don’t expect to find appropriately sized boxes in the last moment. There are various sources to buy boxes; some of the retailers have these boxes for sale apart from the moving companies. The key is to buy more boxes than the estimated amount. Excessive boxes can be sold back or give away to someone who intends to move in near future. Moreover, you can contact friends who recently moved and ask if they have extra boxes for you to buy at a cheaper rate (sometimes you may get them free of charge). So, make sure to have a lot of boxes before you move.

  • Have a moving checklist prepared

In fact, a moving checklist can be defined as an essential “to-do list”. This list should include all the steps you should take during the move. This may work as a calendar enabling you to monitor your progress. With such approach, you can experience a smooth moving process without forgetting the basic steps. Prepare this list with all the tasks with potential deadlines and put all your efforts to complete them within the determined time frame. More importantly, prepare this checklist well in advance at least a month prior to the moving date. Such list will ease away the stress and make sure you stay on track all the time. Don’t miss even a small task.

  • Plan your unpacking

After moving to your new location, you would need some time to unpack all the stuff you took with you. Under practical circumstances, you will need at least 3 days to put everything on track. Until everything is unpacked, you should have essential supplies to live conveniently. There are two possible solutions to overcome such situation;

  • Create a single box or a suitcase for each individual assuming that you are going on a family outing for three days. Have 3 sets of clothes in each of these packages. In addition to that, these boxes must have toiletries, medical prescriptions and other vital items. Make sure to keep these packages separate from the rest of the items; probably marked with a special tag or label saying “open me first”.
  • If not, as the second option, you can create these “open me first” boxes for each room. Apart from the personal items, you may include some paper cups, a coffee maker, some flatware for the kitchen etc. in this package. These two options will assure a comfortable stay for you during the first day or two.

Additionally, it is better if you can visit your new neighborhood prior to the actual arrival; such approach will help you to be familiar with the new surrounding and live a stress free life.
